What is your background in broadcasting?
AnswerWith a lifelong background in theatre, my introduction to broadcasting came in the early '70s when, as a teenager, I was chosen to produce a television show that was being created from scratch by a group of four candidates who were chosen from nine hundred applicants. I didn't take the opportunity lightly as I had been preparing myself for a career in media from the time I was in grade school, creating audio and visual productions and presentations that ranged from Bangladesh to Amchitka Island, along with other events of the day. At the time it would have seemed impossible to envision a world where media could be produced and broadcasted from a home based studio, or even a personal computer equipped with a few simple components, but having worked in the field for decades, pushing the limits of my own computer system and internet connection, it is now a concept that is accessible to a worldwide population. Moving from film, sound studio and slide-tape productions to computer-based media production in the early 1980s, I was given the opporunity of working with iNet2000, a primarly government based internet system, in 1988, experimenting with the idea of managing my downtown business and staff from my remote home based office while at home with my youngest kids. The first transmission took several hours using with a 300 baud modem, but the staff were truly impressed with this technology, along with other innovations such as a bar code system that I had developed to streamline their job as well as increasing safety and confidentiality. It amazes me that even after all these years folks have not come to see the value and importance of this system in their own operations! In 1998 I closed down my studio, opting instead to work in the virtual world when it came to sharing images and media with clients and working on other means of taking the high overhead of bricks and mortar into the world of e-commerce and production. As a person who is a right-brained creator as compared to a techie, I wanted to be able to share with the artistic and creative community a sense that this was not technology, per se, but an opportunity to reach a global audience with their talents and gifts on a grassroot and environmentaly friendly way, as well as introducing them to the many benefits of using these tools to their advantage. Today we teach the next generation filmmaking and other media-based skills via the internet as well as on location through our 'Behind The Lens' workshops and Character Driven broadcasts. We assist our clients in making the transistion, first in their thinking and then in tangible ways, to the virtual world that is at their fingertips through live broadcasts, media on existing or new webspaces and interactive means of reaching and teaching a global clientelle.
